Over the past few years car engine tuning has advanced at an exponential rate. The use of electronics technology in cars allows for much more accurate control of the engine's performance and economy. It also means that engine tuning has become a highly technical area with electronic and mechanical components diesel engines.
Electronic control units (ECUs) control almost all modern car engines. The microprocessor in the ECU can be replaced with a reprogrammed chip to change the workings of the engine. During the first years of "re-chips" a reprogrammed chip may have solved one problem with an engine then create another. All engines are different due to manufacturing production and the different stresses imposed during their usage. The best modern day re-chips allow the chip to be programmed for an specific engine, therefore bringing out the best performance. Some re-chips don't even need replacement of the chip but use a device to bypass or interface with the original chip.
